i think Yilgun's first translation is right most possibly;

i was not able to come->gelemezdim
i could not come->gelmeyebilirdim
i could/would not have been able to come->gelemeyebilirdim

Hi Marion
How do you translate the Turkish sentence below into English then? Maybe you can clarify...
'Eğer Türkiye'de kalmasaydım, bu işleri yapamayabilirdim'.

Quoting MarioninTurkey:

these are not quite right. The Turkish does not refer to an event in the past, but the English does.

If I had not stayed in Turkey I would not have been able to do this job (veya these things)

yani

yapamayabilirdim = I would not have been able to do

Does this mean there is no translation of "i was not able to" into Turkish then?

There is a difference between “gelemeyebilirdim” & “gelmeyebilirdim”. “gelemeyebilirdim” means like “ i had something to do and i came after finished it, if i could not finish that work, i was not able to come”. “Gelmeyebilirdim” is like nothing but choice of yours, i had a choice to come or not to come, it is only related to me-my pleasure not like “gelemeyebilirdim”. When you say “gelemeyebilirdim” you are bounded by anything else than you.

Actually i am not an expert but i understand like this in Turkish so maybe we need to ask this to a native Turkish teacher. Btw i translated them wrongly, they should be “gelemeyebilirdim” & “gelmeyebilirdim”.

Sadece endişeli olduğunu söylediğin için sordum, ve neden endişelendiğini çözemedim. Benim için çok önemlisin, ve sadece senin mutlu olmanı istiyorum. Seni üzdüysem özür dilerim.

Seni tekrar bırakırsam korkar mısın? Endişelenme, ancak bazı kişiler geçmişte birçok soruna sebep oldu, yalan söyleyerek ve bir şeyleri saklayarak. Aynı hatayı ikinci kez yapmam. Sana güveniyorum.
