THE VERB " SARMAK"

1. to wrap around

   Doktor koluma sargı sardı. ----> The doctor wrapped the bandage around my arm.

   doktor = doctor

   kol [arm] -- kolum [my arm] --- koluma ---[to my arm]

   sargı [bandage]

   sar [to wrap]---sardı [he/she wrapped]

2. to spread , to take over

   Yabani otlar tüm bahçeyi sardı -----> The weeds has spread all over the garden.

                                                      The weeds took over all over the garden.

   Karıncalar bütün mutfağı sardı -------> The ants took over all over the kitchen.

3. to interest, to excite, to give pleasure  [ as a slang]

    O film beni sarmadı ---> That film didnt excite me.

    Beyzbol beni hiç sarmaz ---> Beyzball never interests me.

4. to surround

    Köylüler etrafımızı sardı ---> The villagers surrounded [around] us.

   Birlikler köyün etrafını sardı ---> The troops surrounded the village.

5. to clothe, to put on

    Şu şalı üstüne sar. ---> Put this shawl on you.

" Bir musibet bin nasihatten iyidir " ---> This is a proverb that literally means :

" One disaster [bad thing] is better than 1000 advices "

There are some people who dont listen when other people advices them repeatedly..Those people dont want to change their bad or dangerous behavious by just other people"s advices until something bad happens to them. When the disaster hit them, they take lesson and they change their behavious. So sometimes we need bad thing happen to us to take lesson from it  and not to  make same mistake.

Example : Say, A Mom tries to get her little boy to stop running and jumping on the furniture before he hurt himself. But the boy doesnt listen..His Dad also tells him to stop..but he still take no notice of them. Finally he falls on his leg and breaks his leg. After that incident he never runs and jumps on the furniture again. The terrible incident [breaking his leg] taught him lesson, therefore that incident was much more effective than his parent´´s words for him to stop it.

The nearist proverb in english for this one would be " A burnt child dreads the fire "

´Şeytanın bacağını kırmak ´ is a saying

 literally " to break Satan´s leg" which means " to turn one´s luck around , overcome a bad   luck or ill fortune "

Example :

-- 3 kez girdiğim sınavı kazanamadım ama bu sefer şeytanın bacağını kıracağım.

-- I couldnt pass the exam that I took three tımes before, but this time I will turn my luck around.

-- Bizim takım hep iyi oynuyor ama yeniliyor. Ama bu maçta şeytanın bacağını kıracağız.

-- Our team always play well but loses. But we will overcome our bad luck with this match.

The word " Ekmek = Bread"

Ekmek [Bread] is sort of holy food for Turks. We respect Ekmek and it symbolizes the "food" in general. I mean , Ekmek is essencial food for our suppers. I think on this planet, there is no any other nation who is eating Ekmek as much as we eat. We love our bread. In breakfast,in lunch, in dinner , even with Pasta !!

Therefore we have some expressions concerning Ekmek :

Ekmek = Bread

Ekmek Parası = [lit.bread money which means "modest livelihood"]

Ekmek parası kazanmak için akşama kadar güneşin altında çalışıyor.

[He is working under the sun just to earn modest livelihood]

Ekmek aslanın ağzında = [ lit. the bread is in the lion´s mouth , which means "its hard to make a living" ]

Bu günlerde ekmek aslanın ağzında ---> Nowadays, its hard to make a living

Ekmek kapısı  ----> [ lit. the bread door which means " the place where one works for one´s living" , the place that you earn money in ]

Bu bakkal benim ekmek kapım ---> This shop is the place that I earn my living ]

Ekmek kavgası  --> [ lit. Bread fight. which means "to be in difficulties,struggles to earn living"]

Bu gurbet ellerde ekmek kavgası veriyorum. --->  In this foreign land ,I am in struggles to earn living ]

Ekmeğiyle oynamak ---> [lit. to play with one´s bread which means " to cause somebody lose his job purposely ]

Onun ekmeğiyle oynama ! --->  Dont cause him lose his job !

Ekmek elden su gölden ----> [lit. bread from hand,water from the lake  which means " very easy life without working ]

O ekmek elden su gölden yaşıyor ---> He is not working but living an easy life, all needs are provided without working .

Merhaba, may someone who is knowledgeable on Turkish accents help me?

I´m starting to get serious with learning Turkish.

I need suggestions, before I learn anymore: Can someone suggest which Turkish accent you find most beautiful? If you are Turkish, could you suggest a Turkish dialect you like?

Accents are important to me, if someone could give me their opinion and why you find this Turkish accent beautiful (e.g. post an example of your favorite word) you will just make my week!

I would really appreciate your opinions!

THE WORD " ABONE " IN TURKISH

Abone : Subscription, Subscriber

Abone olmak = to subscribe

Derginize abone olmak istiyorum --> I want to subscribe to your magazine.

Abone olmak is also used as phraisal slang for actions which becomes habit or addiction.

Istanbul´a abone oldum. Her yaz oraya gidiyorum ---> I got addicted with Istanbul, I go there every summer.

O, düğünlere abone oldu, hiçbirini kaçırmaz.  ---> He/she got addicted with weddings,he/she doesnt miss any of them.

Abone[lik] ücreti ---> Subscription charge

Abonelik ücreti ne kadar ? ----> What is subscription charge ?

Üyelik ve yıllık abonelik ücretleri ---> Membership and annual subscription fees

Aboneliği iptal ettirmek ----> To cancel one´s subscription.

Internet aboneliğimi iptal ettirmek istiyorum---> I´d like to cancel [stop] my internet subscription.

Abone olma şartları   -----> terms of subscription

Abone olma şartlarını okudunuz mu ? ---> Have you read terms of subscription ?

Aboneliği yenilemek ---> To renew subscription.

Aboneliğinizi yenilemeniz gerekiyor ---> You need to renew your subscription.

Ücretsiz abonelik -----> Free subscription

abur cubur ---> [colloquial] fast food, food eaten in casual snacks.

Abur cubur yemek sağlığına zararlı ---> Eating fast food is bad for your health.
