This issue could be very confusing for a learner. Basically, what HaNNo and Aida Krishan said is 90 per cent of the truth. In sentences which denote existence or possession, var/yok is used. Think of var as and adjective meaning ´existent´. Bir arabam vardı literally means ´A car of mine was existent´.

If against all odds olmak is used in sentences where you expect var/yok it always expresses a change of state *) **): ´the car came to my possession, the situation changed´. This in my opinion shows in the translations Teach-er and si++ have given.

*) This applies for non-existential sentences as well: Mutsuzdum ´I was unhappy´, Mutsuz oldum ´I became unhappy´.

is the speaker talking about the listener’s certain good pair of shoes which he has seen and whose existance he is sure about? Or is he speaking about good shoes in general, any good shoes that the listener might have in his possession, in which case the accusative marking is here because definiteness is the natural result of the possessive marking. In other words, what is the scope of POSS + ACC here,
