I do understand what you mean, Elena. These aphorisms are often worth a zero as literature and it is frustrating to work on them. But if we were better translators they would probably order more important texts from us wouldn´t they?

gokuyum once said it years ago: if your translation makes someone happy it was worth the effort.

As a learner I would not overlook any piece of language. Good text or bad text, you can always learn something from it. And the most rewarding moment is when you read or listen to someone and you suddenly feel it: this is good Turkish now.

No you will find uğurlu and rahatlık in the dictionary.

The rest are grammatically inflected forms of vermek, olmak and bela.

Şükürler olsun is probably the Turkish equivalent of Arabic Alhamdu Lillah meaning ´Thank God´.

Hayırlı uğurlu olsun is wishing ´good luck with it´. I think the taste of hayırlı is archaic but I am not sure.

Allah rahatlık versin ´May Allah bestow you peace/ease´.

Allah cezanı versin and Allah belanı versin are more or less the same ´God damn you´ but it might be that ceza ´punishment´ indicates more to the hereafter, i.e. burning in hell.

Allah kahretsin ´May Allah oppress/overwhelm him´. Maybe used as a curse against someone or something we cannot fight  -  so we ask God to come and make it fair for us.

My translations are approximate. Probably a Turk can provide you with a more detailed answer taking into account their use in different situations.

Cursing is an interesting subject. Besides, Turkish people seem to take it seriously, it is not just empty words for many. Any additional information is welcomed.

The Swedish language Institute, Språkrådet, published a list of new Swedish words last year. One of these newcomer words was the adjective o|google|bar, lit. something like un|google|able. It was explained as something that cannot be found using the usual web search tools. Google objected this definition and put pressure on the Institute to change the definition into something that cannot be found by using the Google tool.

Språkrådet deleted ogooglebar from the new words list.
