The reason I say that mathematics is more important than Turkish is this:

1. If you pass MATHS but not Turkish, you go to a language course in Turkey for one year. The Turkish government sends you and in most cases also pays for you. You get to stay in a dormitory and you get a burs from government. (in my class there were people like this).
- The diploma that the Turkish course gives you, will be accepted the next year, if you also show you passed the MATHS.

2. If you dont pass MATHS but only TURKİSH: too bad, you have to wait a year and enter again.

So in that case you have to wait one year, whereas in the first case you get a decent Turkish language-education that you dont have to pay for. And your maths-results will still be valid for another year. In the second case, results are not valid at all.

Quoting umairibrahim:

Thankyou for all the advice.

1. It is impossible for me to be in Turkey before taking the exam. So I have to prepare for it myself.

2. What are TÖMER courses?

3. I have done college level calculus. Isnt that sufficient for preparing for the mathematics part?

4. I intend to apply to METU for undergraduate in Architecture. What do you suggest?

Thanks again,
Umair.

1. Ok. Make sure you buy GOOD books, from Metropol or Tömer as I suggested. Maybe you can order them online or ask a Turkish friend to send to you.

2. TÖMER is a language-institute in Turkey that offers language courses Turkish for foreigners. It will help you pass and in some cases a diploma of this institute that says you passed their exam, is enough too. (so if you fail in YOS, you can take this exam in summer and show too).

3. I dont know what college level calculus is, but the exam covers MANY maths topics, without calculator and in short time. From matrix to integral to faktöryel to equations. Also geometry and trigonometry. I left the book in turkey, but it was a 400 page book with at least 30 different topics of different difficulties.
(IQ questions can be made without studying too, but I suggest you study all types of questions just in a few days so that you can make them without losing time reading the questions, because the biggest difficulty in the YÖS exam is TIME).

4. I dont know much about that univeristy, all I know is this:
- With 40 points you passed the exam, but some universities ask more points. For example, for English language study, you need around 50 points. For architecture you need around 60-70 points if I remember wel.

Email the foreign office of METU and ask what their requirements are, for example.. 60 points or 70??
Sometimes foreing hişghschool diplomas are valid too. For example the Chinese Gaokao if you have certain grades etc. These are listed on the YOS website.

But Atrila, in that case you open the road for ALL the forums of this website to be censured by whomever wants to delete whatever is or is not relevant for a thread.

I think its not a good idea, since there will be just as much people who would abuse this possibility.

You cant pass the exam from learning from this website. I took the exam, and it is really tough.

Apart from mathematics and IQ questions, you get a one hour test with 60 questions. So 1 minute per question. But the paragraphs are long and ask understanding of grammatical names too. It is not an exam you can prepare on your own when you are not in Turkey yourself.

I suggest you inform about TÖMER courses, or at least buy their books. When visiting or contacting them, tell them you need it for YÖS.

The exam is next April, but I suggest you start studying now, for both mathematics (pretty tough!!), IQ (easy but you need to know what is asked so you wont lose time on reading the questions), and Turkish.

For the mathematics and IQ part, you just have to pass. If you dont pass this part, you cant enter university.

For the Turkish part, you can get three levels:

A: Turkish is sufficient, student can start at turkish university.

B: Turkish is not sufficiant enough, but can be improved in short time and student can enter turkish university where medium of instruction is mainly english, but student has to take Turkish course during the year.

C: Turkish is not enough. Student must take a one year course before he can enter university.

In case you have past maths but got C for Turkish, you are sent to a Turkish course such as Tömer and your maths results will still be valuable one year later. In most cases Turkish government pays for your course.

In anyway. This website is most definitely not enough to pass the text. It is a tough one!

If you have the chance to stay in Turkey for a period of time, I suggest you this:

Metropol Dershane in Ankara. They have special books and sepcial lessons for foreign students. They are pretty expensive, but all the people in my class who went there, passed. I couldnt go there, but I bought their books and with some intense homestudy I passed too.
If you dont have much time, you can also take their trial-exams. They are only 5ytl and are on saturdays. The dershane is in Kızılay, but I dont remember the exact address.

They however do not help in Turkish language part, but if you ask me, the maths is more important.

Nargile in Turkey is just an 'innocant way of smoking (strong?) tabacco'. In Holland, depending on whether you are in a Turkish coffeehouse or a Dutch coffeeshop, you may indeed find people using it in combination with drugs.

But how you related that to Trudy is a mystery to me

Quoting Trudy:

Football is very important for many people here. (I absolutely hate it). When there are World or European Championships almost 90% of the nation is glued to their television set.... and when 'we' are in a good position the country is suddenly complete orange. Because of the international transfer system some of the Dutch football players are famous world wide (Van Basten, Cruyff, Van Hooijdonk and more).

I do think that football is more important in Turkey than in Holland though. It seems to be more intense during 'normal' matches than in Holland.

But you are definately right about the 'orange wave' that comes over the country. I have seen Dutch nationalism always as wearing orange clothes during a match and jumping and shouting in a stadyum.

Nationalism is always stronger in Holland in times of football than normal. Many Turkish people I have met seem to think we have the same 'unpleasant' feeling for German people, like they have with the Greeks. I can say this is definately not true. The only times I hear hatred towards the German people is when we play against them and are afraid to loose (again).

Thread: How do you waste your money?

The biggest thing I wasted money with once was with laziness. I didnt return the books from the library for such a long time, just couldn't be bothered, that I had to pay over 40 euros for nothing.

I don't think I waste money so much. Since Turkey I have grown more conscious about how things in life are not to be taken for granted to much, so I try to put money aside and work for what I want to come true.

Then there's the question.. what's wasting money? I used to get angry when my mum tried to make me eat my food by saying 'The children in Africa have nothing, think about that!' Now I know it was about appreciation and waste, but then I wondered how my empty plate was gonna help a poor kid.

As long as I appreciate what I have and can obtain, I wont feel an occasionally ordered bacon and cheese toasty in the İrish pub as a waste of money just because I could have made that at home too.
