Ataturk’s Turkish Memorial at Gallipoli

This poignant memorial to the Anzacs (below) stands at Ari Burnu and was unveiled in 1985 when the Turkish Government officially renamed the area "Anzac Koyu". The memorial contains the moving words of Kemal Ataturk, the Tukish commander and later President of Turkey:

"Those heroes that shed their blood And lost their lives….You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours….You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well." Ataturk 1934

"...coffee didn't become super popular over a large area until the Ottoman Sultan in Istanbul outlawed it in 1543 because it started to get more recognition than he wanted. Then coffee boomed. In 1554, the first coffee house was set up in Istanbul."

I AM LISTENING TO ISTANBUL

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed:
At first there is a gentle breeze
And the leaves on the trees
Softly sway;
Out there, far away,
The bells of water-carriers unceasingly ring;
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed;
Then suddenly birds fly by,
Flocks of birds, high up, with a hue and cry,
While the nets are drawn in the fishing grounds
And a woman's feet begin to dabble in the water.
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.
The Grand Bazaar's serene and cool,
An uproar at the hub of the Market,
Mosque yards are full of pigeons.
While hammers bang and clang at the docks
Spring winds bear the smell of sweat;
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed;
Still giddy from the revelries of the past,
A seaside mansion with dingy boathouses is fast asleep.
Amid the din and drone of southern winds, reposed,
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.
A pretty girl walks by on the sidewalk:
Four-letter words, whistles and songs, rude remarks;
Something falls out of her hand -
It is a rose, I guess.
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.
A bird flutters round your skirt;
On your brow, is there sweat? Or not ? I know.
Are your lips wet? Or not? I know.
A silver moon rises beyond the pine trees:
I can sense it all in your heart's throbbing.
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

For visa renewal I used to take the 'motorlu' train from Sirkici to Edirne, crossing the famous Uzun Köprü on the way. I would then hire a 'payton' to take me to the border. I could pay the driver to wait for me while I walked across the border to Greece; have a glass of tea in the small Greek border town, walk back across the border to Turkey where, an hour or so later, he would be waiting faithfully to take me back to Edirne. Then I'd take the 'motorlu' back to Istanbul. A most pleasurable trip every time!
Can one still hire a payton these days?

It's too much influenced by 'world music' trends. I much prefer contemporary Turkish singers who reflect traditional sanat and halk styles. But, there it is.

Though its cities are filled with the ancient architecture of its long history, Turkey is considered one of the most modern Muslim countries in the world. This cultural juxtaposition is most evident in Turkey’s contemporary pop music scene, where classical traditions and instrumentation blend with sophisticated global pop and dance music. Putumayo World Music’s newest release, Turkish Groove, reflects this unique musical mosaic..."

The distance -- and silence -- between the two lonely, depressed men soon grows to intolerance, on Mahmut's part, of the chaos Yusuf has brought into his life.

God has given us a dark wine so potent that,
drinking it, we leave the two worlds.

God has put into the form of hashish a power
to deliver the taster from self-consciousness.

God has made sleep so
that it erases every thought.

God made Majnun love Layla so much that
just her dog would cause confusion in him.

There are thousands of wines
that can take over our minds.

Don't think all ecstacies
are the same!

Jesus was lost in his love for God.
His donkey was drunk with barley.

Drink from the presence of saints,
not from those other jars.

Every object, every being,
is a jar full of delight.

Be a conoisseur,
and taste with caution.

Any wine will get you high.
Judge like a king, and choose the purest,

the ones unadulterated with fear,
or some urgency about "what's needed."

Drink the wine that moves you
as a camel moves when it's been untied,

and is just ambling about.

Rumi

For Mac users, acquisitionp2p.com is a great site for music downloads.
Type in Turk, Turkish, Turkish folk etc., or the name of almost any artist to download. From there to itunes or 'Toast 6 Titanium' you can burn cd's. The music is constantly being uploaded from personal music libraries.

If you have access to a Mac computer try acquisitionp2p.com
I found the tune you wanted by Cem Adrian there and several others by him. Not so many by Derya Türkan, but the site is such that you have to keep trying.

Does anyone know the song, sung by a male with male backup voices that has this chorus: "camu, camu, söyle bana nere gidem"?

Turkish radio stations on line:

A great way to listen to Turkish language,and music,
and practice comprehension is to tune in to Turkish radio stations on line:

http://www.yayinonline.com/

Yayinonline.com lists 60 stations that may be heard on-line, though several may not work reliably.

Stations are listed by city, music type, and broadcast area. The music variety and different station focus is huge. Email addresses and station web sites are noted.

From http://www.yayinonline.com/ select the station of your choice,then click on "dinlemek için tıklayın".

For example: Radyo 16 broadcasting from Bursa.

"Sercan Saruhan'la Hoş Muhabbet" is broadcast from 14:00 to 17:00 Bursa time. In addition to a good mix of Türk muzığı, his humorous call in requests are a good way to follow Turkish dialogue.

Even the repetitive nature of "reklam" is great for practice comprehending numbers, addresses, products, phrases.

Dinle!

In order to be able to type in Turkish:
Under the Apple menu (MAC OS X)click on System Preferences:
Click on International.
Then click on Input Menu (3rd one over).
Scroll down the list until you see Turkish. There are three choices for Turkish.
Choose 'Turkish' (not the QWERTY one). Put a check in that box.
At the bottom of the page check 'Show input menu in menu bar.'
A Turkish flag should appear in the Finder page on the top line next to your time and date and Internet symbol.
Be sure to also leave checked the native language you are using.

Close out of International

If want to type in Turkish click on the Turkish flag on the menu bar. The Turkish flag will now show and letters on your keyboard will type in Turkish letters. If you want to see where the letters are, open the same drop down list and click on 'Open Keyboard Viewer.' You will get a mini diagram of the location for the various Turkish letters. To return to your native language, click on that flag in your menu bar.
