1.  He  asked  me  if  I had seen  his father in the market today.

The suffix  -I    [ i,u, ü ] 

This can be considered as  verbal adjective suffix , since it does turn some verbs into an adjective.

Such as  ;

ölmek - to die 

öl  +  I [ i, u, ü  ] 

öl  +  ü  -->  ölü  [ death person or something , deceased]

ölü  yapraklar  -  dead  leaves

çevrilmek  -  to  be surrounded by

çevril   +  i   =  çevrili   [ surrounded ]

 üç  tarafı  denizlerle  çevrili  bir ülke  -

 A country which its three sides  surrounded by the sea.

dikmek  - to plant , to make something stand

dikilmek -  to be planted 

dikil + i  =  dikili   ===>  planted, standing 

dikili  ağaç  -  planted  tree, standing  treee

There is a saying when people has nothing in this life [ wealth wise] ;

 " dikili  ağacı  olmamak "  ===>  Having no saving , nothing at all. [financially]

    no house, no belongings ,  not   even a single tree. "

Selim´in  bir dikili  ağacı bile  yok.    ---> Literal meaning is  --->  Selim has not even a single [standing] tree.

That means, Selim has no saving in life  at all. [money and economically]

ört  +  ül   +  ü   =  örtülü --->   covered

Kısa  otlarla  örtülü  bahçe. -- >  The garden that is covered with  short wild  grass.

ser  +  il   +  mek  =  to  be spread

ser  +   il    +   i   =   serili   ---->  streched out on,  laid out on [something]

Yere  serili  olan  halının  tam  ortasında  bir  sehpa vardı.

There  was  a coffee  table  right  in  the  middle  of   the carpet  streched out on the floor.

 tak  +  ıl  +  mak   =  to  be attached, to be put on , to be plugged in

  tak  +  ıl   +  ı   =    takılı     --->  attached,  plugged  in ,  on 

  Duvara   takılı   fiş…….   --->  the  plug  that  is  plugged in on the wall………..

Don´t worry Nifritity, Reported speech is  not difficult only for you but its difficult for any learners. You will get there one day..Just do reported exercises as much as possible. 

Or, you can use the simplier way which is  ;

For example ;

My father is going to Antalya . 

Babam Antalya´ya gidiyor.

When you report this to someone else, you can also go for the easy one which is ;

" My father is going to Antalya" Ali said [to me]

 Ali [bana] " Babam Antalya´ya  gidiyor " dedi.

instead of  the difficult one which is ;

 Ali said [to me]  his father was going to Antalya. 

 Ali [bana]  babasının Antalya´ya gittiğini söyledi.

At the end of the day, both ways say the same thing.
