Turkey becomes world champion in volleyball championship

22 August 2011, Monday / TODAYSZAMAN.COM,

Turkish women became champion first time in history in the 2011 FIVB Women’s World Volleyball Championship after Turkey defeated China in Sunday’s game.

During the championship, which was kicked off with group matches on Friday in TVF Başkent and Ankara Sport halls, Turkey could advance without losing points in its first group.

Turkey was only defeated by China 3-1 in three matches in its second stage group matches. Turkey advanced as second in the group to a semi-final.

Turkey could hardly defeat in a very difficult match Serbia in semi-finals with 3-2 and advanced to the final to face China.

Turkey’s final match with China is also reminicisent of a final match between China and Turkey in 2007 in Mexico. Turkey lost to China with 3-1 and received the silver medal.

This time Turkey did not give a chance to its rival and defeated China with 3-0.

This is the fifth time Turkey participates in the FIVP championships. Turkey became sixth in 1993 in Slovakia, 13th in 1999 in Portugal, second in Mexico in 2007 and fourth in 2009 Thailand.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan congratulated the volleyball team by sending a letter to the chairman of the Turkey Volleyball Federation Erol Ünal Karabıyık.

President Abdullah Gül and Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Çiçek also sent congratulatory letters to the volleyball team.

Quoting SweetKisses

The text message i received was gel internet pazar. Sen seçir ne zaman.

If i am right ´gel internet pazar´- means come on the internet on sunday

However i am not sure on what the translation of sen seçir ne zaman is, i was just assuming that it may be something about choosing a time although im pretty sure none of them words mean time.

Gel internete pazar ----> come to the internet on Sunday

Sen seç zamanı  -----> You choose the time

may be that person wants you to come on internet on Sunday and he/she wants you to choose what time on Sunday..

The team discovered a large avenue and a crossroads in the ancient city

Ancient sculptures from Roman times have been unearthed during excavation work in Aydın’s Karacasu district.

Roland Smith, head of the excavation project, said it was an important discovery for the Afrodisias excavation. The excavation work has been ongoing since 1961.

Noting that Afrodisias was an important city during the Greek Empire era, Smith said the ancient city has history starting from 2 B.C. to the 6th century after Christ.

“In ancient times, Afrodisias was a city that combined art, history and nature in the same locale,” said Smith, adding that Afrodisias is one of the best preserved ancient cities in the world. “We have a chance to find rock tombs, sculptures, ancient remains, art works in one city. That’s why Afrodisias is very important for our excavation works.”

The team is continuing excavation work in three locations. “One of the excavation areas is called Tetrapylon Avenue. We are working on three different venues in three points in this large avenue. This avenue gives information about this ancient city and how people lived during ancient times.”

Noting that the team has found valuable remains from the Ottoman era, Smith said: “We have found a sculpture from Roman times and we guess this sculpture belongs to a very important leader of the town.”

The team estimates that the sculpture belongs to the Sebastian Passage. “We are still researching the area to learn when this city was established,” he said.

Smith said the team also discovered a crossroads in the city. “There are two drainage channels in the intersection of the crossroads,” said Smith, adding that this is a very important development that revealed the condition of the city.

The other area that the team currently works in is called Hadrian’s Bath. “We keep working on the site with restoration and documentation projects.”

Smith said Afrodisias deserved to enter UNESCO’s main list. “If Afrodisias enters the list, then the tourist numbers will increase.”

Mersin to attract Arab tourists with cruise ships

MERSİN - Anatolia News Agency

Mersin, a city on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, intends to be one of the main shopping and tourism centers of Turkey. The city currently preparing to host high volumes of Arab tourists via cruise ships. While it aims to boost its tourism with its pier and cultural heritage, shopping mall owners wait for cruises to boost tourism

Mersin, not merely a coastal city anymore, has blossomed into a center of tourism, thanks to a new project that will attract cruise ships shuttling wealthy Arab tourists to the city in the summer.

The city, home to an important port, first aims to attract Arab tourists to boost shopping tourism. As a result of the visa-free policy for journeys between Turkey and Arab countries, and Turkey’s ability to maintain good relationships with its neighbors, tourism witnessed a significant increase in some cities when compared to recent years and Mersin is one them.

Tourism trends have changed recently. In the old days, tourists were choosing the best hotels and few locations; nowadays tourists want to see the social and cultural heritage of many cities, instead of only one.

Among all the cities in Turkey, Mersin shines for these tourists because of its cultural heritage sites and new shopping malls. The cultural, natural landscape of the city will attract tourists as well as its shopping tourism. Mersin will attract wealthy Arab tourists with its shopping centers.

The city is also waiting to see large cruise ships during the summer months, while shopping malls are preparing to receive new investments in the city center.

Parallel to these developments in tourism, the shopping malls in the city have started to organize exclusive VIP tours, especially for tourists from the Middle East.

Mersin hosts lots of tourists from Lebanon right now; Lebanese tourists are known to spend more money than any other tourist that visits the city.

Lebanese tourists also prefer to use cruise ships due to the political controversies that they experienced in Iran and Syria.

The shopping malls owners are quite satisfied with the latest changes in Mersin. Speaking to the Anatolia news agency, Mersin Forum shopping center General Manager Adem Erol said shopping malls are very popular in Middle Eastern cultures. ”That’s why they prefer to shop from large malls when they visit Turkey,” he said.

Noting that Arab tourists think Turkey is the door that opens to Europe, Erol said: “Turkey is currently the number one country of the Middle East. People come to Turkey to spend money, rather than going to Italy and France.”

The current visitor figure of Mersin Forum is more than 2 million people, said Erol. “If we can use the potential in Mersin, Tarsus and Hatay, then more Arab tourists will visit Turkey.”

Currently, most of the tourists who visit shopping malls in Mersin are from Arab countries, said Erol. “Our aim is not just to increase the tourist figures, but also to host wealthy European tourists in Mersin.”

Erol said the Forum Mersin hosted 32 people from an Arab country the other day. “And they shopped for three hours. As a result of this shopping, we earned a total of $4,200.”

This is a really satisfactory amount, said Erol. “We aim to host groups like this in the future,” he added.

Noting that with the exclusive cruise and airplane tours, shopping malls aim to host lots of rich tourists in Mersin, Erol said: “We know that cruise ships are coming from Syria and Egypt and we have made decisions based on these cruises.”

Erol said, in the beginning of April some of the projects and decisions that the malls have agreed upon have been suspended. “But currently with the rising tourist figures, we are once again re-evaluating the decisions and new projects so we can develop the region and tourism in Mersin,” he added.

Anticipating that soon cruise ships will also start visiting Mersin, Erol said Mersin would be one of the largest tourist shopping centers in the world.

Second Part

it was nice to see you and we were very lucky that both weeks were face to face . yes i did have a nice holiday with my family and then an extra week with gemma. i will tell that i went out every night and yes i did drink sometimes came in 3 or 4 oclock and will even give u a list of every single bar and resturant we went in if you want cause your friends kept shouting at me every time they saw me and said there going to tell you but i dont care i was on holiday there were no boys so before they tell you i have and it would have been the same if you were there so no different. so im tellling you now to save the arguemnts when you come out and they tell you i dont need to lie.
