Greetings Abla!

This is one of the days when I need to check sg 2nd personal ending three times before I can trust myself, but I tried to practice some questions anyway. Surprisingly I noticed the word order in questions is not always clear to me.

1. How many times is it allowed to drive around the traffic circle?

Kaç defa göbeğin etrafından dolaşabilirsin?

2. What should I do when the navigator tells me to drive into someone’s yard?

Navigasyon birinin özel avlusuya sürmeye öğüt verirken ne yapmalıyım?

3. Why don’t all fish die when lightning hits the sea?

Yıldırım denize vurduğunda tüm balık niye ölmer?

4. How much does the sky weigh?

Göğün ağırlısı ne kadardır?

5. Why aren’t birds electrocuted on wires?

Telin üstündeki kuşlar elektrikle niye öldürülmez?

6. Why did God let my kitten die?

Allah kedimi niye öldürdü?

7. What is the connection between dragons and dinosaurs?

Ejderha ve dinozor arasında ilişkisi nedir?

I have to correct myself:

Başaramamaya çalışıyorken başarsan, ne yaptın?

Başarısız olmaya çalışırken başarılı olursan, ne hangisini yapmış olursun?

It´s amazing how long one can make the same simple mistakes. (I´ve been slamming my forehead here.) I think I could have avoided many of the morphology handicaps if I gave it another day or two  -  what´s the hurry anyway? If there is a lesson here it is that I shouldn´t ever listen to my ear when I try to create a Turkish sentence, because it works against me all the time.

Today´s notes:

1. The place of the question word seems to be wrong in many of the questions. This concerns especially niye/neden, which in your corrections is regularly thrown to the left, before the main elements of the sentence. Is there a difference between niye and neden? (My ear tells me there is.)

2. ´The top´ is tepe. How do you end up with the form kilisenin en tepseindeki?

3. I understand if it was şeytanın soyadını but why şeytanın soyadı?

4. başka, diğer and ayrı: I always seem to choose the wrong one.

5. This alternative stucture mı yoksa + mı confused me at first but I think I got it now. Nice way to express it.

P.S. Present continuous is overrated!

6. Why did God let my kitten die?

Allah kedimi niye öldürdü?

Allah kedimin ölmesine niçin izin verdi ?

Let die=öldür

Live and let die=yaşa ve öldür

And of course:

-dir- = to let someone do something.

işi dur durmadı = he didn´t let them stop the work.

kendini öptürmedi = she didn´t let him kiss her

 Let die = ölsün     not   öldür

 öldür  = kill

 Let him die = bırak ölsün.

 For example, someone had an accident lying on the street and you hate that person. While people trying to give first aid to that person ,you shout  at people saying "Let him die ! " " Bırakın ölsün "  I know thats not a good example but just to make it clear.

When it comes to "durdurmadı" it can also translated as just "to stop " For instance :

Arabayı durdur , ineceğim --> Stop the car, I will get off.

What you do is called literal translation tunci. You should try to change your Turkish sntence for better Turkish.

For example:

Öldürmeyen Allah öldürmez = The God will never let you die sometimes.
