There are two different kinds of sentences here:

1. Sen siyah saç|lı|sın.

saç|lı = NOUN + ADJECTIVE DERIVATOR ´haired´ (like Sw hår|ig)

siyah saçlı ´black haired´ (like Sw svart|hår|ig)

> ´you are black haired´

2. Adam|ın saç|ı yok.

This is a normal possessive construction, GEN + POSS + var/yok.

´The man has no hair´ lit. ´The man´s hair+his is non-existent.´ (Sw. Mannen har inget hår.)

Personally I can see no reason why *Adam saçlı değil could not mean the same, it is quite logical, but we just have to believe this is the Turkish way to say it.

Once there was a proverb in the translation section here, it came to my mind when I read the message....here it is:

I wish those who open new topics gave another thought on what kind of titles they use. There must be thousands of threads with the name "Please" or "Help". Afterwards if you try to look for a certain issue these headlines are not of much help.

A good advice from a mother tongue teacher is to write the text first and after that think of a suitable informative headline for it. It is also possible for the initiator to change the headline later for instance if a simple translation request develops into something more interesting.

Finally.

I was trying to compare scalpel´s examples with what Kuntay and Özyürek write here based on their observations on a large material of Turkish conversations. They are talking about visual attention while scalpel mentioned things that are previously referred to. No matter how we want to describe it it seems that şu is generally used for drawing someone´s attention to an object (ok I admit which is not exactly at hand) and o comes to the scene as soon as the speaker and the addressee agree about what the talk is about.

For example, imagine a dinner with two people, where one of them needs to refer to a glass away from her on the table. In English the speaker could say ‘could you pass me that glass? ’ since the glass is away from where she is sitting. However, in Turkish, depending on the addressee’s visual attention on the referent, the speaker would use “şu” if the addressee’s visual attention is away from the glass (e.g. when she is concentrated on the food), but use “o”, that is the distal form, if the addressee’s attention is directed towards or presumed to be on the referent.
