önce bir tencereye 200 gr katı yağ koy erisin. Eriyince 2 subardagi suekle kaynat biraz.

First put 200 grams of shortening (butter or margarine I guess) to the saucepan and let it melt. While it is melting add two glasses of water and let it boil for a while. Then lower the heat, leave the saucepan on the lower heat and add two glasses of flour. The mixture will take the form of a dough. Cook the dough on the stove for another five minutes. Then take it off to get cool. Break five eggs into it and mix them well into the dough. Then put the dough into a piping tube, roast the pastries in boiling oil and dunk them straight away into warm honey. Good appetite.

Q: What does iyice okuyunca mean here?

Yes, but isn´t it somehow illogical that the verb takes the same form verilen even though top is the subject of the original sentence top çocuğa verildi and çocuk is only the indirect object of it?

I think it only proves that participles are much more flexible than finite verbs.

Thank you for your help, gokuyum.

Duecy adı verildiği verilen kediyi

I believe you but I wish I could understand...

Let´s say

                             top çocuğa verildi

ok?

Then, is it both

                             çocuğa verilen top

                             AND top verilen çocuk    ?

Translation practice, could someone please take a look?

A rare two-faced kitten has been born in Oregon. The animal which has two faces and one body is known as a Janus. Its owner Durkee says she did a double take when she discovered the newborn.

"This morning the kids actually found them and came in and said, ´Mom there´s a kitty with two heads´, and I said ´I think you guys are just tired, you´re crazy, that doesn´t happen.´"  “Bu sabah çocuklar gerçekten onları bulmuş ve yanıma girip ‘İki yüzlü bir kedi var’ dedi. Ben ‘Yorgunsunuz galiba, kafayı yediniz olsa gerek, böyle şeyler olmaz’ diye cevap verdim.”

The kitten which has been named Duecy has been examined by a vet and everything seems to be in good working order. Although after being rejected by her mother, it´s down to the owner to feed the kitten with a syringe and keep her warm with a heating pad.

So it is quite regular and I was imagining things. You can make this kind of modifications between the constituents of the passive sentence in English but obviously you can´t in Turkish. Thank you, gokuyum.

                      Anne çocuğuna Tayyip adını verdi.

If we passivize it should it be

                      Çocuk Tayyip adını verildi

OR Çocuğa Tayyip adı verildi     ?

Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Uzak 2002

It took me some time to get used to the slow narration of Uzak. Most of the time more happens in the minds of the characters than at the actual scene. Before the story came to its end it captured my mind completely and I was breathing in the rhythm of the movie.

It is the story of a young boy Yusuf who comes from his village to seach for a job in the city and stays with his relative who is well off. Istanbul looks both rough and beautiful, a place where many dreams die. Yusuf and Mahmut suffer their own pains but it does not make them close to each other (I think this is what the title basically means but I am not sure).

No one dies, the world does not collapse but so sad it is. Can you feel it?

Yılmaz dayı ingilizce, sevgilisi Türkçe bilmezken; hangi ara konuşup, anlaşıp bebek yaptılar bende bilmiyorum. Pek umurumda da değil açıkçası.

Bundan sonra her yabancı sevgilisiyle ortak dili olmayan türk erkeğine Yılmaz diyebiliriz olur mu?

TC argosu...

I can´t not to come.

There is no such structure in English but I guess I understand what you mean. Something like

                              I cannot abstain from coming

isn´t it?

In theory a form like *gelmeyemem could be built in Turkish but I don´t think Turks have noticed this yet.

Using the modality markers I guess gelmeliyim is as close as you can get.

Who knows, maybe there are some lexical means though. What about

                              gelmekten sakınamıyorum   ?
