Thread: Bu kalp seni unutur mu? dizisi / series

Does anyone watch the new series on Show Tv Bu kalp seni unutur mu? ?  Realizing Im spending way too much time watching too many soap series I decided to watch a more educational series.

It is a Turkish drama series, showing the coup of 1980 and its aftermatch up until 2003. It tells about the military, the people pursued for engaging in political activities, the Diyarbakır prison, the tortures etc. The series was warned by RTÜK (something like Board for Radio and TV) for the violent torture-scenes, which afterwards were cut out and decreased in following episodes. One of the advisors of the series is Murat Belge, a leftist liberal, intellectual and civil rights activist.

I am really impressed with the series, it is a welcome change after the production of so much sh*t like Aşk-ı Memnu and series alike. However, I wonder what your opinions are? In how far is it objective (and if it is so, it sheds a whole new light on Turkish historiography, at least tv-wise), or is it biased. How serious should we take scenes and events displayed in the history? Since I know someone who was heavily tortured during this period (and had the luck to escape to the Netherlands), I knew about the tortures, but this series sometimes has given me goosebumps. Id like the opinion of others if anyone is watching.

And if you´re not, you should It only started about a month ago.

Köfte with broccoli and potatoes cooked in water with ´acı biber salçası´ and some chicken stock left from last dinner, with yoghurt-garlic sauce and salçalı butter.

Sütlaç and an apple from a relative´s garden for dessert.

A sixpack of Beypazarı soda and a bag of ´Jelibon´ whilst studying, pistachio and beer for when I´m done

Actually I thought it was a bit weak. The dramatic twists in the life of the characters wasn´t displayed as much as it could be if you ask me. They say the book is very good though.

Listening to movies songs and conversations I notice that "şey" is usd in a way different than its literal translation= THING.  It seems like it is used as a space filler like etc or and and so on/  Can anyone give more examples?

Yes it´s a space filler, like ´ehmm´, or ´what do you call it´ (when you´ve forgotten something´s or someone´s name for example)

I thought Turkish people did not enjoy foreign tea-bags.

There is a BIIIIIIIG difference between Tetley´s, PGtips or Red Label and the ´canary piss´ that Dutch shops sell as ´English teablend´ or ´English Breakfast Tea´. (alsof de kip over de soep gevlogen is )

The fact that your boyfriend wants to take you to meet his parents, shows enough if you ask me. Most Turkish males know what their family expects from their spouse, and wouldn´t want to bring a foreign girl home if they´d feel that the parents wouldn accept a foreign bride.

As said, be the cleaned up version of yourself but don´t exaggarate. As for behavioural things, you might want to ask you boyfriend instead of us. He knows his parents best. For example, my in-laws would never accept the hand-kissing-thing, whilst others insist on it (they might actually nearly slap their hand up your face to get it kissed )  It is usually appreciated if you offer to help when the mother (or anyone else) goes to the kitchen to prepare food or bring tea. Oh and when sitting, it is more appropriate to put your legs next to each other (closed, not wide open obviously) instead of over each other.

As a gift, anything particular from your homecountry, or nice cookies, chocolate is probably welcome (if you buy chocolates with fillings, make sure it is not liquor ). Or baking something turkish like börek and bringing it along also may show your willingnes to adapt the culture.
