it may be used an expression.

may be used meaning "either... or" in english.

ya salı ya çarşamba ((either) on tuesday or on wednesday)

some historic facts about turkish and azeri.

almost five centuries ago, they are the same.

after ottoman sultan yavuz selim´s war between iranians and ottomans the languages started to change. at that time, iran was governed by azeri originated people. today still 1/4 of the population of iran is azeri.

anyway. the second seperation was turkish language revolution. first revolution changed the pronounciation, second one words. also after russian soviet republic, azeri gained many russian words. but still havily influenced buy arabic and persian. the closest language to azeri is not modern turkish but ottoman turkish.
