Some characteristics of Verbals

1) Verbals  can convey auxilliary meanings/judgement

Geçen -à The one who passes

Yapmak à to do [doing,making]

                  - Çay  yapmak istiyorum.

I want to DO [make] tea.

- Yoldan geçenlere bakıyordu.

He was looking at the people who was passing by.

2) Verbals  can take voice suffixes just like

          - Benim fikrimin görüşülmesini  istiyorum.

                                Passive voice

I want my view to be discussed.

      3)Verbals can take –negative suffix

            -Yarın sizinle gelmemeyi tercih ederim.

I prefer not to come with you tomorrow.

           -  Kahvehaneyi sevmeyen bir insandı.

He was a person who didn’t like coffe-house.

4)Verbals can be used with mood of capability [-abil, -ebil]

- Senin böyle bir şey yapabileceğini hiç düşünmemiştim.

I never thaught you could do such a thing.

* So, the verbals actually don’t lose their verb character in complex  sentences.

Special Test for Kurban Bayramı

1) Müslümanlar kurban bayramının ilk günü  sabahleyin bayram namazını kılarlar.

Muslims attend Bayram Prayer on the first morning of Eid-el  Adha.

2) Kurban  etininyük bir  kıs  diğer insanlara  dağıtılır.

Most part of Kurban meat is distributed to other people.

3) Kurban etinin üçte biri ev halkına kalır.

One third of Kurban meat is remained with household.

4) Kurban ibadetinin özü  insanın Allah’a  yaklaşmasıdır.

The essence of  Kurban practice is “a person’s getting closer” to Allah.

5) Kurban fedakarlıktır. Yardımlaşma ve dayanışma örneğidir.

Kurban is  self-denial and it is an example of helping eachother and solidarity.

Quoting ikicihan

"As railways developed and expanded one of the key issues to be decided was that of the rail gauge."

what do "that" and "of" mean here, i cannot fully understand. if i built this sentence, i would ignore the "that of" part, or at least "of" part. is there any difference in the meaning with and without that parts?

I am not a native English speaker but my understanding by “that of ” is its pronoun function.

"That of" is mostly used to compare two things (that is used as a pronoun).

The population of Istanbul is greater than the population of Ankara . = The population of Istanbul is greater than that of Ankara.

Likewise, in your sentence it is used as kind of pronoun which is subject of the compound sentence [one of the key issues]   in order to avoid repating it.

one of the key issues to be decided was that of the rail gauge." = One of the key issues to be decided was the issue of the rail gauge.

*mak/mek  geliyor/geldi

This construction is used when you express a  feeling or a  desire [inside of you] to do something. It is normally used with “içinden /içimden

Şu an içimden sana sarılmak geliyor. -à I want to hug you now. [A feeling inside of me tells me to hug you ]

İçimden onu dövmek geliyor. -à I want to beat him. [ A feeling inside me tells me to beat him ]

İçimden yemek yemek gelmiyor. -à I have no desire [inside of me]  to eat.

İçimden Fransızca öğrenmek gelmiyor. -à I have no desire to learn French.

Hiçbirini yemek içimden gelmiyor.---> I have no desire to eat any of them.

Onunla konuşmak içimden gelmiyor.---->  I don’t have desire to talk to him/her.

Bugün okula gitmek içimden gelmiyor. ---->I have no desire to go to the school today.

Şu an içinden ne yapmak geliyor ?

What you feel like to do now ?

Past form

İçimden toplantıyı terketmek geldi ama yapamadım. I wanted to leave the meeting but I couldn’t do it.

Quoting Scott88

I already read it, but I don´t believe it´s accurate.

These lyrics are from a poem of  Ercişli /Erzurumlu Emrah who lived in around 17th century in eastern Anatolia.[ Ercis –a town of Van, /according to other researchers Erzurum]

This is a love story , According to one of the story,  during Ottoman-Iran wars, Emrah’s lover Selvihan is captured by Iranian soldiers, and she is taken Iran as a captive. Emrah goes after her for years and years and he had suffered bitterly while looking for her. Since then, in that region and in other regions , many stories and poems were told reffering his sufferings of  love and pain while he was looking for her.

So, if we look at this lyrics in the light of the story above, we will see the pain and sufferings of him.

I would translate it as follows:

If only I was a poor traveler wearing black,

I lost my delicate lover,

if only I could find her searching ..and searching

I wish I could fetch my love,

leaving her land in flame,

If only this piteous sorrow of mine

would find a cure…a cure..

If only  the distances were  close

and in all women had I right

If only my love were Lokman Hekim

healing the  [my] wounds…the [my] wounds

* Lokman Hekim is a mytich person in history, he was believed to have power to cure all ilnesses.

According to some strories, he found the formula of immortality. But while he was passing a bridge , unluckly he lost it by dropping that bottle of immortality from the bridge.

Dear all,

I need a help in translating the following 6-line poem by Ercişli Emrah into English:
"Ben bir seyyah garip olsam giysem karayı karayı
Yitirdim nazlı yarimi bulsam arayı arayı

Yari düşürsem ardıma bir ateş düşse yurduna
Şu benim garip derdime bulsa çareyi çareyi

Uzak yollar yakın olsa her güzelde hakkım olsa
Yarim lokman hekim olsa sarsa yarayı yarayı"

Thanks!

Scott88,  check the following link, there is whole translation of those lyrics

How do you say...

Baran when we next meet i need a FINAL decision as this is no longer a game i need to know if you want to see your child and be part of his/hers life... or not......

Baran bir dahaki buluştuğumuzda senden artık SON bir karar vermeni bekliyorum. Zira artık bu bir oyun değil. Çocuğunun hayatında yer almak ve onu görmek istiyor musun istemiyor musun ?…bunu bilmem lazım
