This suffix comes onto some verbs and make them adjective.

Kork + unç  - Korkunç

Gül + ünç  - Gülünç

İğre [n] + nç -  İğrenç

Kıska[n] + nç – Kıskanç

Dropping the possessive

In compounds , formed with personal pronouns, the possessive may be dropped.  The person is already clear in the personal pronoun.

Bizim oğlan -à Our son/boy

Benim ev [im]

Benim ev hemen şurada  -à My house is right over there.

Senin sigara [n]

Senin sigara hangisi ? -à Which one is your cigarette

Onun kalem [i]

Onun kalem -à His/Her pencil

Gelecek hafta operaya gitmek istiyorum ama arkadaşım annesiyle birlikte yolculuk ediyorlar.

     why not conjugate it in the future tense, when Im speaking of NEXT weekend

Because “your wantING to go to opera NOW “  The incompleted  possible future action “your going to opera” is supposed to take place next week,

However at the very time you make this statement  you are expressing your “your wanting/willing “ to go to opera at present time.

Arkadaşlarımla dışarıya çıkmadan önce anneme bildirmeliyim.

 This means must right? She must know? and ´-dir´ refers to anne?

Yes, this means “I must inform my mother “

No, -dir is part of  verb “bildirmek” = to inform

 what does that suffix mean?

This suffix “mekte”, “makta” functions as “-iyor” however, there is slight differences between these two kind of suffixes although both indicate the continues tense.

-        The usage of –makta[mekte] is not as common as –iyor[ıyor, uyor, üyor ]

-        -makta may be used more formal statements.

·       Also, the main difference is , the –makta sentence , the action has definitely started started and still continuing.

·       Whereas –iyor sentence may have not necessarily started, as in the example below:

 - Yarın İstanbul’a gidiyorum.  --à I am going to Istanbul TOMORROW.

In the sentence above, “the present continues tense action” actually has NOT started yet. In other words, “My going to Istanbul hasn’t started yet”

Going back to your original sentence,

Biraz türkçe konuşabiliyorum, ama hala öğrenmekteyim.

I speak little Turkish but I am still learning.

The action started in the past and still continuing, I mean your learning Turkish is still happening.

İki yıl önce araba kullanmayı öğrendim.

Your original sentence was :

I learned how to drive 2 years ago and you come up with a sentence like this -à  önce iki yıl, sürücüme öğrendim.

Ok. You started with “time”, which is correct and you put the main verb [öğrenmek] in the end which is correct too.

But, stating time I think you thought in English way -à

“ before two years = önce iki yıl “ which sounds odd. It should be first the number [2 yıl ] then  “önce”

İki yıl önce ………………………………….öğrendim.

Araba sürme + y [buffer letter] + i [accusative ending ,because the verb öğrenmek requires accusative marking for direct object]

 When the noun compound ends with a vowel and before taking any case ending “n” buffer comes.

Mutfak  masası -à Kitchen table

We want to say “ On the kitchen table”, to be able to say “on” we need “da/de” case suffix. And naturally we need “n” buffer.

Mutfak masası  + n + da -à On the kitchen table.

Tıp Fakültesi -à Faculty of Medicine

Tıp Fakültesi + n + de -à At the Faculty of  Medicine

Tıp Fakültesinde öğrenciyim. I am a student at the Faculty of Medicine.

Again, “durmak” was used as “an auxiliary verb”.  It formed a verb out of a loanword “şahit “ [witness].

Şahit durmak = to witness 

However,” Şahit olmak” is more common form.

In Turkish there are quite few verbs are used as “auxiliary function” such as :

“durmak, vermek, koymak, yazmak, kalmak,bilmek”

Main ones are -à “olmak, kılmak, etmek, eylemek, yapmak”
