But Küntay and Özyürek say the Turkish system of demostratives is more complicated than this. It is not only about distance like the English system but also about the listener´s attention. According to them şu is neutral what comes to distance. It rather refers to something the listener doesn´t look at.

I have written about it here

                       http://www.turkishclass.com/forumTitle_51913_7 (post 69)

and there is also a link to the research.

I am not trying to insist with any of you natives here -  I will probably never learn the correct use of demonstratives anyway  -  but I find this double dimensioned system very interesting. I never heard about it in any other language. I wish someone would comment it.

But what is the difference between şu and o in your model, si++? Both are out of reach. I have read about a reseach which says that it is about what the listener is looking at. Does it ring any bell to you?

The Sultan with the Earring

Selim I the Grim (1512-20 ) must have been a fascinating man. He was tall and broad-shouldered. He mastered swords, bow and arrow, horse-riding and wrestling. He was full of energy and knew how to inspire other people: even though he was known as a bad-tempered boss who often had his closest viziers killed the best forces of the country competed on the chance to work close to him.

Besides, there was also a humble side in Selim’s personality. He liked modest life. Maybe that’s why instead of resting in Istanbul palaces he spent his time on battle-fields and more than doubled the Ottoman land during his short reign:

Tarihçiler, Yavuz Sultan Selim´i sekiz yıla seksen yıllık iş sığdırmış büyük bir padişah olarak değerlendirdiler. Historians have valued Selim I the Grim as a great sultan who got the job of eighty years done in eight years.

During Sultan Selim’s reign the Ottoman empire spread from Anatolia to Egypt including the whole Middle East in between. Selim personally entered Cairo in a ceremony on January 24, 1517. He also called himself the Caliph of Islam and the Servant of the Holy Cities of Mecca and Medina.

No matter how great the Empire, how powerful the man, penicilline hadn’t been invented yet.

22 Eylül 1520´de "Aslan Pençesi" denilen bir çıban yüzünden henüz 50 yaşında iken vefat etti. On September 22, 1520 he died of an abscess called “Lion’s paw” at the age of 50 years only.

x-(i)msi means something (looking) like x

x-(i)mtrak means similar, x-ish

It was a good idea to bring about these suffixes which learners usually see once a year.

Thank you, si++.

I’m afraid you are underestimating women, AlphaF.

We all have different roles and we jump from one role into another with no difficulty. Don’t you think if a woman who has with her own work reached the position of a judge doesn’t have enough common sense to understand what her government post preconceives from her including treating people justly? If her Muslim identity is so strong  it is impossible for her to adopt another role even at work she probably wouldn’t have struggled in order to succeed in her career but concentrated on homemaking and social work for instance.

People are clever enough to make their own choices if they are given the chance.

Demokrasi; demokrasisimsi.

Varımtrak yokumsu... Batılımsı da doğulumtrak... İlerimsi de biraz gerimtrak...

Olmaz ol alacakaranlık! Yerin dibine bat da bir daha çıkma!

Gel ey aydınlık, gel!"

My Try:

Get lost, colourful darkness! Drop dead, colourful darkness! May your house and fireside collapse, colourful darkness! Come on and fall into incurable pains and continuing life of misery, colourful darkness!

Darkness, it’s nighttime, not every night turns into morning. Colourful darkness doesn’t have a morning, it’s a state of uncertainty, it keeps on moving.

Neither light nor darkness…even if there is there isn’t…even if there isn’t there is…even if it seems like there is there isn’t, even if it seems like there isn’t there is.

Laws; both there are and there aren’t…They exist for some people, for other people not…Sometimes yes there are, sometimes not.

Human rights; you know, just like there were some but from the other hand not.

Democracy; something resembling so-to-say-democracy.

Just like there is and still isn’t…Westernish but something Eastern in it…Going forward and sort of returning a little bit at the same time.

Get lost, colourful darkness! Drop dead and don’t stand on your feet again!

Come, light, come!

Ben sana oyleyim işte
Ben sana oyleyim işte
Ben sana.. Ben sana..
Ben sana oyleyim işte

Sometimes a rustic song falls

to the darkness of my heart.

it entangles itself to my tongue

every syllable gets entangled to my tongue.

You see, that’s how I am to you, …

Sometimes an ill-tempered longing

sweeps me off my feet,

makes me “I” and “you” in turns.

As “I” appear, “you” is still left.

You see, that’s how I am to you,…
