Yes, it helps. There seems to be a bigger distance to things that are described with öyle. The distance can be real or on the level of thought.

What is confusing about them is that they are derivations from bu, şu and o but they don´t seem to follow quite the same logics.

angel-of-death, thank you for replying.

I have a feeling Turks when speaking English are using this too much in abstract contexts, in places where that or it would sound more normal to me. I guess it is because of this reference to mentioned things.

I suppose ´this/that kind of´ (adj.), ´this/that way´ (adv.) are all expressed with

                               böyle, şöyle, öyle.

Are they like any adjectives? How to choose between them?

It´s not that simple, Bambib, but it´s a good start.

gokuyum, thank you.

A great, fearless, admired man who had his lonely and melancholic side. Very touching in my opinion.

I like the metaphor of eyebrow being a bridge over the tears.

stone bridge manner

Yes it´s a good description!

It´s a rule that never failed me. I mean I was never corrected when I followed it. When I refer behind my back I use bu.

You are right. That´s an important point also.

The ordered minimum zakat is some 2,5 per cent of a person´s savings. But according to tradition Prophet Muhammad was always in a hurry to give away everything his household didn´t absolutely need. He hardly owned anything.

What goes to your own stomach is gone. What is used for charity is saved for the hereafter.

Socialism already exists in Islam

I would rather use the world welfare state. Islam is not against private ownership which in my opinion is the basis of socialism. From Islamic point of view it´s ok to get rich if it is your destiny.

Two characteristics in Islam are against capitalism:

1. Zakat (alms) which give the poorest members of the society a chance to consume.

2. Prohibition of riba (interest) which makes it impossible for people to take advantage of each other´s needy state.

An interesting view, ikicihan.

I am amazed how well language purification has succeeded for Turkish. I am just a foreigner but when I look at some texts from a hundred years ago it seems to me that the written language was in the process of losing its own vocabulary and being corrupted by foreign influence. Now it is under control. A while ago there was a thread here about computer terms which are newcomers in every language. The touch of Türk Dil Kurumu shows in them. They are not flowing into language uncontrolled from English but replaced with Turkish reserves.

What you say here surprises me:

mostly right wing paties dont like this purification process, so it was stopped after 2001. maybe it may start in the future again, when the ruling party replaces with a left wing party.
