Take the stem of the verb
i.e. git from gitmek-to go
bin from binmek-to ride
anlama from anlamamak-to not understand

add the past simple personal form of the verb 'to be'

i.e dim
din
di
dik
diniz
diler

so I went=gittim
I rode=bindim
I didn't understand =anlamadım

The endings follow the rules of vowel harmony.
