Thank you for adding this, Haydi. One of the mysterious things in Turkish syntax. But usually you can´t make cardinal mistakes with -dir and that´s why we don´t feel desperate need to clarify it.

Interestingly, the article stresses that -dir expresses certainty which roots from the facts. But when you feel you have to stress the certainty there is already a doubt, isn´t there? gokuyum has said something about this somewhere...one day when I tried to sprinkle -dir´s in every sentence...here it is:

Vikipedi explains -dir this way: creates the aorist of every tense. Not very clear to me. What on earth could yazıyoruzdur mean?

In onlardan birçoğ|u the possessive suffix in the second part can´t be motivated by a possessive construction. There has to be another reason.

Just to make sure you know the facts I tell you, lemon, that according to Islamic theology Qur´an is a revelation from God, literal God´s word. It is a miracle and it´s not from this world. There is nothing man-made in it. Not a word changed in it during its presence on earth. A piece of paper where a word of Qur´an is written is not a piece of paper. If only the word Allah is written on an item you shouldn´t step on it or take it into dirty places. You shouldn´t recite Qur´an if you are not in the state of purity.

That´s why I was wondering why a Muslim wants to give it to someone who doesn´t understand its value.

The history of Qur´an is very much different from that of the Bible and these books shouldn´t be compared. You certainly know this.

Whether you or anyone else believes in the holiness of Qur´an or believes not is not my concern. My opinion is there are no tools to discuss things like this because for the one who believes everything is proof and the one who doesn´t sees this proof with different eyes. It’s an exceptional question. There are two question markings: the pronoun ne and the particle mi which we usually don’t see together.

olmak here means change of state, it’s an equivalent to English ‘happen’.

> ne oldu? ‘what happened?’

The dative complement tells ‘happened to whom’?

> Takiyeddin Efendi’ye ne oldu? ‘what happened to Taqi al-Din efendi?´

The particle mi makes it a yes/no question. When it is placed in the middle of the sentence the question concerns the preceding word, in this case ne.

> Takiyeddin Efendi’ye ne mi oldu? ‘is-it-what happened to Taqi al-Din efendi?’

> ‘Are you asking what happened to Taqi al-Din effendi?’
