"amin saol ablacıgım sizinde"

This has been taken from a conversation. I bet what was said before was some kind of an invocation. It could have been just about anything, for instance

- Allah orucunu kabul etsin.

- Amin. Sağ ol, ablacığım. Sizin de.

- May Allah accept your fasting.

- Amen. Thank you sister. (May He accept) yours, too.

Thread: Question on Style

Natives, how does this style sound to you? Why does the author use so much passive, even the combination of causative and passive? Is he trying to sound smart, isn´t there a simpler way to say it or does the complexity bring some prestige to the style? Is it his personal style or does it belong to this type of texts?

(Serdar Kaya)

(I don´t necessarily need a translation, I would just like to know your opinion about the style.)

It is time for you people to learn how to open new topics. You cannot just add your question in the end of any thread that happens to be on top.

If your question is about language choose Forum > Language and click the Post New Topic button. For translation requests do the same but follow Forum > Translation. Not so difficult.

I am not too pedantic but the front page looks like a mess these days.

Evil eye is known in all cultures, not only those which we think are backward. Envy is typical to human mind and its corruptive power is well known. It is one of the basic motifs of folk poetry.

Many thanks, tunci. I know they were heavy and dull sentences.

1. The novel they talk about has been translated into Turkish with the name Semnut´un oğlu Sinuhe. I thought I can´t go and rename it.

2. kendisiyle aynı adı taşıyan 1954 yapımı bir Hollywood filmine de temel teşkil etti.

yapım must mean ´production´ here but I can´t quite undestand the structure. Is it a  NOUN + NOUN + NOUN compound? If were ignore Hollywood would it be 1954 yapımı bir filmi where 1954 actions as a noun like "the year 1954"?

3. It´s good to know this yanı sıra pattern. It is often difficult to organize long lists.

I tried this text. Could someone please pick up the worst mistakes?

During the Winter War (1939–1940 ) and the Continuation War (1941–1944), Mika Waltari worked in the government information center, placing his literary skills at the service of political propaganda. 1945 saw the publication of Waltari´s first and most successful historical novel, The Egyptian. Its theme of the corruption of humanist values in a materialist world seemed curiously topical in the aftermath of World War II. The book became an international bestseller, serving as the basis of the 1954 Hollywood movie of the same name.

-----------------------------------------

Waltari wrote seven more historical novels, placed in various ancient cultures, among others The Dark Angel, set during the Fall of Constantinople in 1453. In these novels, he gave powerful expression to his fundamental pessimism After the war, he also wrote several novellas. He became a member of the Finnish Academy in 1957 and received an honorary doctorate at the University of Turku in 1970.

Waltari, çesitli antik kültürlerde geçen yedi tarihi roman daha yazdı, örneğin Bizans’ın 1453’teki düşüşü zamanında geçen “Siyah Melek” romanını. Bu romanlarda, esasi karamsarlığınin güçlü anlatımı meydana getirdi. Savaştan sonra birçok kısa hikaye de yazdı. 1957’de Finlandiya bilimler akademisine bir üye oldu ve 1970’te Turku Ûniversitesinin fahri doktor unvanını aldı.

----------------------------------------

Waltari was one of the most prolific Finnish writers. He wrote at least 29 novels, 15 novellas, 6 collections of stories or fairy-tales, 6 collections of poetry and 26 plays, as well as screenplays, radioplays, non-fiction, translations, and hundreds of reviews and articles. He is also the internationally best-known Finnish writer whose works have been translated into more than 40 languages.

Waltari, en bereketli finli yazarların birisi. En azından hem 29 roman, 15 kısa hikaye, 6 hikayelerle masallar seçkisi, 6 şiir seçkisi ve 26 oyun hem de senaryolar, radyo tiyatrosu oyunları, kurmaca olmayan yazılar, çevirler ve yüzlerce kritik ve makale yazdı. O, yazıları 40’tan daha fazla dile çevirilen, uluslararası olarak en iyi tanınan finli yazardır.

She is beautiful but the speaker calls her ugly in order to protect her from the evil eye. Some ignorant people use this method to keep the child safe from envy.
