Şakik-i Belhi, may Allah be merciful to him, once went to Mecca.

Someone recognized him and came close to him.

- Efendim, could you give me a piece of advice?

Belh asked that person:

- How is your livelihood? If you cannot find anything what do you do?

The man answered:

- If we find something we are thankful, if we cannot find a thing we are patient.

Belh then offered his teaching:

- Even Belh´s dogs can do this. If they find something they eat, if they don´t they wait patiently.

The man got surprised and asked:

- Well then efendim, what do you do?

- When we get something we give it to our religious fellows. When we don´t we do not feel sad. We thank our Lord.

This advice very much appealed to the poor man. He hugged Belhi and said:

- Efendim, you are a blessed man. May Allah Ta´ala increase your prosperity.

Continuous or not, the present perfect denotes an action that has begun in the past and continues until now (or its consequenses are still there). In

                        How long have you studied Turkish?

there is no mark of continuous aspect but the time conditions are the same.

Interestingly, in Turkish present tense with continuous aspect (öğreniyorsunuz) would be used in such expressions.

But I must confess I have maybe misunderstood something. Yes, Göksel and Kerslake say the past copula ((y)DI < *er + DI) expresses past tense and imperfective aspect. It presents a situation, a state of affairs (i.e. not a perfected action, of course, "being" is seldom perfective) as it was at some time in the past. But definitely in the past. This is what I missed.

ol- is used for changing the time conditions so that the actions reaches the present moment. It reminds me of expressions where olmak is used in nominal sentences also in order to create habitual aspect:

                        Bazı akşamlar film oluyor(du).

I mean if you have to hang another grammatical marker into a verb phrase, where else could you hang it but to olmak?

Your answer is fine. The present perfect interpretation never occurred my mind. It means ol- really adds something to the sentence and changes the aspect of the action.

Do you mean Her zaman çok iyiydin does not have the meaning ´you are still good´? I have understood (I)DI attached to nominals never denotes perfective action (i.e. action finished and done with).

If you want to ask ´how was your mother last time you met her´ what would be the most adequate translation?

Recently I have very often come accross with expressions like

                                  Her zaman çok iyi oldun.

                                  Annen nasıl oldu?

According to what I have learned I would use the ek fiil here: çok iyiydin, nasıldı. Doing so would I make a mistake?

This usage is mentioned in Göksel and Kerslake´s Comprehensive grammar: "In nominal sentences oldu does not always denote change in state (´become´ )." But I wonder, is it very usual, is it getting more usual?

...continuous in the present tense (this is where it comes very close to IYOR I suppose), habitual in the past tense, never progressive or perfected action.

My thoughts:

I have to stop, 

stop longing for the past!

I don´t think you can use durmak here. In English verbs can often be both transitive and intransitive but in Turkish they are either or. For a learner, an important thing to check always is the transitivity of the verb. It is written in dictionaries. Because ´stop´ has an object here it should be durdurmak.

But I am not quite sure if durdurmak is the best/only alternative for this sentence. What comes to my mind is bırakmak, vazgeçmek, maybe kesmek.

                          geçmişi özlemeyi durdurmalıyım

                          geçmişi özlemeyi bırakmalıyım

                          geçmişi özlemekten vazgeçmeliyim

                          geçmişi özlemeyi kesmeliyim

We must ask a Turk which ones are suitable in this context.

If you use -MALI you don´t use lazım any more.

Very difficult to choose between ağrı, acı or dert. My guess is acı. And somehow I hear its plural form here. My try:

                           Artık acılar bitmeli!

After all: wait for natives.

If a slang expression (or a badly spelled line) begins with n it probably has a question word ne or one of its derivates in it. That is because other n- words are relatively new loans and not such basic vocabulary. In Eski Türkçe ne was the only word beginning with n.
