-i must be a possessive suffix here.

´There is not a thing of his, nothing that belongs to him´, right?

You are right but it can also mean "He is okay"

Dear native Turkish member, I am reading a short story from Anton Chekhov ... translated into Turkish.  I have come accross a short passage [3 sentences] that I simply cannot understand.  Can a native speaker have a look at the following and kindly render the translationin English ... explainig [if possible] if there is an idiom .... I don´t know whther this passge may need some FURTHER PUNCTUATION to make it comprehensible to an idiot like me.  I am specially baffled by the use of ´geldikleri´ repeatedly !!

>> Nikola ile ailesinden daha ilk geldikleri gün nefret etmişti.  Buna en büyük etken ise geldikleri ilk gün gerçekten iğrenc olan eve iğrenerek bakmaları olmuştu. Fiokla’ya göre onlar Moskova’dan geldikleri  için evlerini küçümsemişlerdi. <<

He/she hated Nikola and his/her family since the first day they came. The biggest reason of it was that they had disgustingly looked at the really gross house. In Fiokla´s opinion they underestimated their house becuse they had come from Moscow.

If context ıs needed, I can add few more sentences at the begınıng !!

Çevrisini için sabırsızla bekleceğim, lütfen.

Is there a phrase to use when you suggest someone being on first name terms? I know the verb is biriyle senli benli olmak or biriyle samimi olmak but how is it suggested in a civilized way?

senli benli olmak:

Benimle hemen senli benli oldu.  This is not always a good behavior in Turkish. So "senli benli olmak" is not always a good thing.

samimi olmak:

Onunla çok samimiyiz.

If we want to talk openly: We say: Samimi olmam gerekirse....

Dilsiz değildir suskunluk, çok şey anlatır anlayana...

Silence isn´t dumb, it tells many things to one who understands.
Kelimelerin anlatamadıklarını haykırır aslında...

In fact it shouts the things which words can´t tell.
Bir kaçış değildir suskunluk, bir bakıştan çok daha fazlasıdır...

Silence is not an escape, it is much more than just a look.
Sessiz çığlıkların bir adım ötesidir..

It is one step further than silent cries.
hayata ola öfken, insalara ola kırgınlığın ve daha nicesi saklıdır içinde sükunetin.
Rest çekmenin ´asil´ halidir...!!!

Your anger towards life, your disappointment towards people, and more are hidden in the silence. It is the noble form of protesting.

Your question itself. I can´t get it down my throat. I guess it is a cultural thing.

But I admit I am not well informed and maybe I should read something. Atatürk was not among my contacts but maybe I could add him there.

Atatürk is a national hero. Some thinks he was a dictator and a non-believer. But most of the Turkish people still love him and will love.

Sofu Bektaşi´ye İslam´ın şartını sorar.  -Birdir der Bektaşi.  Sofu: -Daha İslam´ın şartının 5 olduğunu bilmiyorsun, bir de bilimden dem vuruyorsun deyince, Bektaşi: - Îmanım, haç ve zekatı siz kaldırdınız, oruçla namazı da biz kaldırdık, geriye kelimeyi şahadetten başka ne kaldı ?

A fanatic asked Bektashi the conditions of İslam. Bektashi said "one". Fanatic said "You even don´t know the conditions of İslam are 5, but you are talking about it. Bektashi said: "My friend, you removed pilgrimage and alms, we removed fasting and praying. What is left other than confession of faith?"

Note: Bektashi criticise fanatics because of them being mingy. Fanatic is a character who seems very religious but very mingy too. In Bektashi jokes Bektashis always criticise this character.
