Quoting Abla

Let´s just take a hundred years back in time. All the wars and oppression were still to come. I have lived with people who had to go through it all and the wounds were long lasting. Still it feels now like it must have happened a very long time ago.

In my opinion European Union deserves to be praised for its acchievements especially at present when the economical crisis has taken all our attention. The Nobel prize reminds us what the Union was originally created for.

In my opinion, two things in present day Europe may put its reputation as a peace maker in danger:

1. EU countries officially exported weapons for the worth of 31,7 milliard euros in 2010. Probably the number is much bigger because the countries have not reached an agreement on how this trade should be reported.

2. EU does not represent a common voice. A European citizen has not been born. Instead, national interests are playing a more and more important role in common decisions. The rich north is blaiming the poor south of something and vice versa. EU has not been able to keep the extreme right and ultranationalist forces under control.

tomac, your share of the prize is 0,23 cents.

Racism is a big problem in Europe. And EU is still a christian club.

bir diğer ilginç hadise ise zamanın inanmayanlarından birinin şems-i tebriz hazretlerine gelip ukalaca "sana üç sorum var şems efendi" diye konuya girmesiyle başlar. Peki o zaman beni buraya niye çağırdınız?"

A short translation:

A man came and said Sems-i Tebrizi that he had three questions. Şems was making a pot from soil. He said go on, ask. Man asked:

1) If Satan was created from fire, how will he burn in hell? Can fire burn fire?

Şems kept listening.

2)You say there is Allah. But where is he? Show him to me so I believe. I don´t believe what I don´t see.

Şems still was going on making the pot.

3)If God had created us why he didnt let us to do whatever we want. Why did he set rules for us? Why will he judge us?

After man had finished asking his question, Şems hit the man´s head with the pot. Man was shocked and he ran to the Kadi  (judge). He told him what happened. Kadı summoned Şems and asked why he had behaved so. Şems said that he had only answered man´s questions. And he explained:

1)He had asked me how could fire burn fire? I showed him that a pot made by soil can harm a man also made by soil. So can he explain why fire can´t burn fire?

2)He wanted me to show Allah and said he wouldnt believe what he didnt see. So can he show me the pain on his head?

3)And he asked me why Allah judge people and doesn´t let them do whatever they want. If that is the case why you summoned me?

Note: This is my favourite tale.

A blind man was walking with a lantern in his hand and a jug on his shoulder in a very dark night. A man came beside him and said:" O crazy man. There is no difference for you between night and day. What is the use of lantern for you?" Blind man smiled and said "I didn´t take this lantern for myself but for stupid people who has a blind heart like you so you can´t hit me and break my jug in the darkness."

Many times you told me you want me to be happy as I deserve it

İn my opinion, "as" in that sentence works as "since", so i would say ;

Bana, birçok kez, mutlu olmamı istediğini, çünkü mutluluğu hakettiğimi söyledin.

It is not very different than "Bana birçok kez, hakkettiğim için mutlu olmamı istediğini söyledin"

Sorry, Gokuyum - I haven´t seen your replies while I was writing mine. I´m also not sure about exact meaning of original text... so probably we will have to wait for someone to help clear our doubts

Look above I guess your second guess is correct.

Thank you, Gokuyum, for your explanation and example. However, I have still some doubts about this sentence:

Bana birçok kez hakkettiğim kadar mutlu olmamı söyledin.

I think it means "you told me many times that I´m as happy as I deserve it" - so there are two things missing:

1. "Many times you told me you want me to be happy...". So it looks like if "istediğini" was missing here: Yes

Bana birçok kez hakkettiğim kadar multu olmamı istediğini söyledin. correct

2. But still, this would mean that "you want me to be happy as much as I deserve it" - however, I think that the meaning of original sentence is "you want me to be happy because, as you said, I deserve it". In this case, could it be translated this way?

Bana birçok kez bunu hakkettiğim için mutlu olmamı istediğini söyledin. correct

Just have been pointed here by Abla What about this sentence?

Anne, kendisinin kıyafetini dolaptan aldı.

Would this mean the mother´s dress? Or would it be still someone else´s dress?

Yes, it would be.
