Thread: Why did şehir become city in Turkish?

Quoting sufler

Merhaba.

I´ve been thinking on it for a long time. Perhaps someone knows an etymological explanation for this. Why the word "şehir" was adapted into Turkish as "a city" considering it probably comes from Arabic شهر [shahr] which means "a month" (as far as I know Arabic)?

Because it is a Farsi word. Şahr means city or land in Farsi language. Arabic one is a different word.

Çok teşekkür ederim, gokuyum! Here is the song that made me start listening to Yavuz Bingöl. I think you know this song.

"Urfa Türküsü"

Yeah it is one of my favourite folk songs. I guess I translated this song in the past. I am happy that you love it.

This translation looks perfect. Congratulations. This is a nice song but some sentences sounds so weird to my ears. Not your sentences I mean the original ones.

Quoting denizli

A traditional song, I wondered but didn´t know, thanks.

For the counting, I meant the rhythm rather than the sylables. I think it is in 5´s which would be very unusual in modern music.

Any idea by Traditional how old this would be? Or how does one find out if a song is traditional?

For a Turk it is very easy to recognise a folk song. They are always written with syllabic meter. They are purer and simpler than arabesue music. Most of the time they are played with saz.

It is not very meaningful. There is a reference to sacrafice eid. Tourism increases in this eid. People go to other cities for a holiday. Kurban olmak means something different in this sentence:.

kurban olayım! colloq.

She´s/It´s so wonderful I feel like dying for her/it.

So toursim is fond of distances
