Note :

The speaker is actually expressing his helplessness and  hopelessness  using abstactive wording.

He is describing his state [situation] and his feelings as if he is in the bottom of a well, he means to say " he is in such a helpless situation that no one can help him. He is feeling such helpless that he may even pull  -the people who are willing to help him- down with him.  In other words, he feels that nobody can help him to get him out of that depressive situation.
