Quoting acute

For the new year I decided to translate a poem by Ahmet Necip Fazıl Kısakürek.

Please feel free to correct or suggest better english meanings.

Bu yağmur - this rain

Bu yağmur... bu yağmur... bu kıldan ince

thinner than hair this rain.... this rain...

Nefesten yumuşak yağan bu yağmur... bu yağmur...

this rain this falling rain... softer than breath

Bu yağmur... bu yağmur... bir gün dinince.

the day when it stop this rain... this rain....

Aynalar yüzümü tanımaz olur.

mirrors will not recognize my face

Bu yağmur kanımı boğan bir iplik

a thread which chokes my blood this rain

Tenimde acısız yatan bir bıçak

the knife lying in my skin without pain   (It should be a knife)

Bu yağmur yerde taş ve bende kemik

a stone on the ground and a bone in me this rain

Dayandıkça çisil çisil yağacak.

pouring rain (pitter patter ) as long as I endure  (It will pour)

Bu yağmur delilik vehminden üstün;

superior than the suspicion of craziness this rain

Karanlık kovulmaz düşüncelerden.

from thoughts darkness is not expelled

Cinlerin beynimde yaptığı düğün

n my brain demons do the wedding ceremony

the wedding ceremony of demons which they do in my brain

Sulardan, seslerden ve gecelerden.

from waters, from sounds and from the nights

Türkiye´de çalışmam için ne gerekiyor  um?

Bugün bir şey yapmadım gerekiyorum.  ?

You shouldn´t conjugate "gerek" abla. It must be always "third person"

işin gücün yok * (I think this is colloquial to mean)

you have nothing better to do

onlar uğraş

(and) they work

[* my reference point]

Like you dont have nothing to do, deal with him. (a sarcastic sentence)

some more .....

üzme kendini ne olur .....

Don´t make yourself sad with what happens

Don´t take it to heart with what will be

"ne olur" means "please" in this sentence. It is weird but we sometimes use "ne olur" as "please".

Don´t make yourself sad please.

İngiltere´den ne haber?

What´s the news from England?

Görüşüyor musunuz daha?

Are you talking with us (seeing us) any more?

Seni kızdırmıyor umarım.

I hope it is not annoying you

Corrections:

1)Are you talking with eachother?

2)I hope he/she is not annoying you.

It looks too bad. Thank you for your help, gokuyum. The corrections are very clear and most of them I understood as soon as I saw them. I have been very careless.

Notes:

1. Minibüsler öyle korkunç bir şekilde sürüyor ki…: Don’t vehicles drive themselves in Turkish (in many languages they do)? No, they go by themselves in Turkish. Ex: Araba gitti.

2. bir yabancı gibi görünüyorsan…: It seems to me that present continuos tense is widely used in expressions of feelings and sensory perception. Am I right? I am not sure.

3. turist polisine geçirmeni tehmin götürmekle tehdit et; Kadınlar sürücünün yanında oturmaktan sakınmalılar: I can’t really understand the division or labour between me- and mek-infinitives. Is it something that can be understood or is it a lexical question (certain verbs govern words with certain forms and that’s all there is to it)? --me and -mek makes verbs nouns. Difference between them is when you add -mek to a verb it gives you the name of that action, its infinitive mood. But sometimes difference between them is so small you can use one of them instead of other.

Ex: Götürmekle tehdit et. Or Götürmeyle tehdit et.

Here is an example that you can´t use one instead of other:

Gitmek çok zor. Going is very difficult. OR To go is very difficult.

Gitme çok zor. This sentence sounds very weird.

This was difficult for me and there are probably mistakes (plus a couple of white places in the end):

My dear, as I told you everything is going to be fine. Soon I am going to do away with those who intervene. If some curious idiots watch what we are writing to each other they will see. In any case I am saying openly very soon I will really balance the accounts with you once more. Your fear of me will make it impossible for you to open those mouths of yours, I promise you. You will be in a position that you will not be able to open your mouths. Be afraid of me.

XXX we say let the jealous get mad.

May XXX get mad.

6. However, if you look foreign most women would probably not comment and just assume you aren’t aware of the rule.

7. You may need to learn the Arabic numerals, as some bus services use them instead of numbers that we know. Bazı otobüs hizmetleri bildiğimiz sayıların yerine Arap ça sayılarını kullandığı için onları öğrenmek zorunda kalabilirsin.

8. Microbuses drive so horribly you have to be ready for a wobbly ride, but it’s easier to use them than buses if you don’t speak Arabic.

9. When you don’t know the way they tend to choose the longer route to get you to pay more.

10. Simply stand at the side of the road and at the sight of an approaching taxi point your hand towards the road. The driver will slowly cruise past you. Ancak Basitçe yolun tarafında ayakta durup yaklaşan bir taksi görüyorken elinle yolu işaret et. Sürücü yavaş yavaş önünden dolaşacak.

11. Women should avoid sitting next to the driver. Kadınlar sürücünün yanında oturmaktan sakınmalılar.

12. If you are certain he is trying to gouge you, threaten to take the matter to the tourist police, which all cabbies fear. Onun fiyatı fazla yükseltmeye kalkıştığından masından emin olursan davayı konuyu her sürücünün korktuğu turist polisine geçirmeni tehmin götürmekle tehdit et.

13. However, please note that the majority of taxi drivers are polite, shy and satisfied with what they get, providing the fair offered is reasonable. Ama taksicilerin çoğunluğunun nazik, çekingen ve verilen diği fiyat makul olursa aldığından memnun olduğunu lütfen dikkate al.

14. The only way for a pedestrian to cross a street safely in Cairo is to ignore the cars.
