Thanks Henry! but now I am confused {#emotions_dlg.angel}

Ok I see my mistake in the first sentence. However Is that one correctly written? I was confused because the original sentence seems to be in a wrong order and used "gelecek". Shouldn´t it be "Ben bu hafta Istanbul´a gidiyorum" ? Which makes its negative form "ben bu hafta Istanbul´a gitmiyorum"

If not, why can you have the verb phrase before an expression of time? {#emotions_dlg.confused}

Ben gelecek hafta İstanbul´a gitmiyorum. It means I will not go to İstanbul next week.

We can use simple continous tense in this sentence because "gelecek hafta (next week)" has already given sentence future tense meaning.

Find it hard to answer questions 7 and 8 because ı am not sure of the context which the sentences are used. Also, those questions don´t seem to be covered in the paragraph which is provided. (written exactly as they appear in the lesson)

Sizce Ali nasıl bir insan(dır)?

What kind of a person is Ali in your opinion?

Sizce Ali´nin otomobilinde neden benzin yok?

Why is there no gas in Ali´s car in your opinion?

Unless they are supposed to be opinion questions?

whats the point.

please

We say simply "yani?" But if you don´t use this expression right after the sentence whose point you want to know it can be obscure. Then you can ask "amaç ne?" "neyi anlatmak istiyorsun?"

I also wish you luck with your learning. I agree that the best way to progress, after a certain point, is to spend time in Turkey, if you haven´t got a Turkish friend to help you locally. You also need to practise listening ( which can be achieved with movies) and speaking, which is also obviously a very important part. I have found the livemocha.com site useful for some aspects of learning, and if you are selective with friends (ie pick Turkish native speakers who are thorough with helping and correcting homework) you will probably improve some more. As with any free site, there are lots of pests and opportunists, but be extra vigilant with selecting ´friends´ and report spam and pests to get them removed or blocked.

I can help you. I did my master´s degree on Turish teaching and  also want to practise my English. If you are interested you should know that my English is not brilliant. If anybody want to practice Turkish they can add me to their msn.

Thank you for the corrections, gokuyum.

I bet all those lexical faults sound funny but I´m not so worried about them. There is one grammar mistake which makes me angry but maybe it´s better not to mention it...maybe there is someone who doesn´t notice. Tense faults are very hard to correct: I try to choose them using all my knowledge but still make wrong decisions. What it takes, I guess, is more reading and listening.

A couple of notes:

- Is var/değil olduk wrong in every situation or in this case specifically?

It is wrong in every situation. Here is another example:

Mutlu değil olduğunu söyledi. (wrong)

Mutlu olmadığını söyledi. (correct)

- Why batacak but gidecek? Bitecek or bidecek? Yatacak or yadacak?

Most of the monosyllabic verbs don´t obey this rule. "gitmek" obeys "but "batmak" doesn´t." "bitmek" and "yatmak" also don´t obey. If I were you I wouldn´t soften the wovels of monosyllabic verbs if I wasn´t sure.

A scorpion, being a very poor swimmer, asked a turtle to carry him on his back across the river. “Are you mad?” exclaimed the turtle. “You’ll sting me while I’m swimming and I’ll drown.”  “My dear turtle,” laughed the scorpion, “if I were to sting you, you would drown and I would go down with you. Now where is the logic in that?” “You’re right!” said the turtle. “Hop on!” The scorpion climbed aboard and halfway across the river gave the turtle a mighty sting. As they both sank to the bottom, the turtle resignedly said: “Do you mind if I ask you something? You said there’d be lo logic in your stinging me. Why did you do it?” “It has nothing to do with logic,” the drowning scorpion sadly replied. “It’s just my character.”

 Here are the minimum corrections. (I didn´t touch everywhere)

Bir akrep, kendinin kötü bir yüzücü olduğu için, bir kaplumbağanın kaplumbağadan onu bir ırmağın başka  öbür kıyısına sırtının üzerinde taşımasını rica etmiş. Merhabalar!

I was just wondering, in Turkish, how would you say:

Every word has 100 meanings.

Could it be: Her sözü 100 tanımı var. ???

Or maybe: Her söz için 100 tanımı var. ???

Or maybe something completely different?

Teşekkürler for any input!

Her sözün yüz anlamı var.

I don´t think you can compare a small nick with a razor to the massive trauma experienced by these animals. Lets face it there is not a pleasant way of killing an animal.

Can´t we kill them with sleeping pills? So at least they won´t suffer.{#emotions_dlg.razz}

here are the facts:

1-Everybody has a right to express what he thinks or feel. So Pamuk shouldn´t pay any money.

2- Pamuk is not a historian and the numbers he mentioned can be incorrect.

3- I also think he made such a statement to get Nobel Prize. I don´t think he is sincere.

4- Pamuk is not a bad author. "My Name Is Red" deserves Nobel Prize by itself.

5- There are better authors than Pamuk such as Oğuz Atay, Yaşar Kemal, Yusuf Atılgan
