Thread: Let\\\"s replace some foreign words with Turkish words! Part II.

Turkish is a strong language. It has enough potential to meet every word that we use in daily life. I know some foreing origin words are already settled but why not go back to the pure turkish words and make them common to use.

The language is like a flag if we let the flag get dirty then we will lose our honour.

People are free to use any foreign origin words , I too am using but I am not against it . But I just am trying to do self-critic  as a turkish language lover.

I usually say "sinirlerim bozuldu" instead of "sinirlerim gerildi"

" Sinirlerim bozuldu" can be used as well.

It doesn´t work sometimes.

I am not against "us" but you cannot replace "akıl" with "us":

akıl almaz=incredible

aklı başına gelmek = to come to one´s senses

aklı başında = he knows what he´s about

aklı başında olmamak = to be incapable of clear thought

aklı başından gitmek = to lose one´s head

aklı durmak = to be dumb founded

akıl etmek = to think of a plan etc

aklı evvel = very clever

aklına gelmek = to come to one´s mind, to occur to one

aklına getirmek = to remind someone, to recollect

aklı kesmek = to decide, to find something reasonable

aklına koymak = to have quite made up one´s mind

akıl öğretmek = to give advice

aklı sıra = according to him/his thinking

akılda tutmak = to bear in mind

akla yakın = reasonable

akla yatmak = to be found reasonable

akıllı = clever

akılsız = stupid

akıl hocası = mentor

By the way, wouldn´t it be better if this topic were included in language section?

Why not you can"t replace it with akıl. Of course you can. if you dont want to use it its your own choise Mr.Si.  The word "Us" is a pure turkish word and its considered equilent of Akıl and its various use by Turkish language scholars. By the way I ve got a feeling that you made yourself habit opposing everything just for the sake of it.

Akıllı = "Uslu" one of them is already very common in use.

Akıl (arabic origin word ) = Us

Muhakeme etmek(akıl yürütmek)(arabic origin verb)  = Uslamlamak

Küre (arabic origin word ) = Yuvarlak

Arz (arabic origin word ) = Yer

Cümle (arabic origin word ) = Tümce

Kadar (arabic origin word )= Değin,dek, gibi

Example : " Buradan eve kadar yürüyeceğim "

"  Buradan eve değin yürüyeceğim "

O senin kadar alçakgönüllü birisi değil

O senin gibi alçakgönüllü birisi degil

I am sorry that mum and dad and ...... have not been well, it must be a worry for you all, i wish i could be there to help you in some way. I promise you i will pray for them every day. I love and miss you all, i hope mum and dad know how much they mean to me, in my heart they are the same as my mum and dad to me, i know i lost Ali and that broke my heart but i hope i will never loose you as my family.

I had an argument with a turkish friend about religion today and I want to say something in turkish can someone translate this.

I am sorry if I offended you, I hope you did not take my words to heart. Do not be stubborn, you know I am new to Islam so have patience with me. I try to help you with what I know. Try to help me also. Lets not argue because of this.

I am sorry if I offended you

Eğer seni gücendirdiysem üzgünüm,

I hope you did not take my words to heart.

Umarım sözlerimi çok ciddiye almamışsındır

Do not be stubborn

Dediğim dedik olma

you know I am new to Islam so have patience with me

biliyorsun ki ben İslamda daha yeniyim ve bana biraz sabır göster

I try to help you with what I know.

Bildiklerimle sana yardımcı olmaya çalışıyorum

Try to help me also

Sen de bana yardımcı olmaya çalış

Lets not argue because of this.

Bundan dolayı tartışmayalım

My try as learner:

It seems Şato(*) have finally found his true princess. Lots of kisses for you.

* - Dictionary gives following meanings for Şato: castle, château. Another thing that comes to my mind is that it can be some name, or maybe some form of a name ? I´m not sure about it ...

tomac ..good translation..its castle.chateau..not name..cos princesses lived in castles in those days. I think the word "chateau" comes from French but used in english as well.

It´s technology not Teknoloji

By the way dont you already use cep telefon for mobile not mobile ?

Popy,I am fully aware that it is tecnology in english ..we are using the word "teknoloji" as adopted form of "tecnology" so thats why i put that word which is still foreign word.

and i am not talking about mobile phone..i am talking about the word "mobile" itself.

For example : Mobile House.(taşınabilir ev) you cant say cep ev (pocket house) can you ?
