Apologies from the English for all their very funny and ridiculous comments! The English get this as well though.

When I was working at a conference in Texas a man said to me "are you English?" Yes, I said. "ahh I have a cousin in London, John Reed - do you know him?"

Hmmmmmmmmm big place London.... :-S

A strange question . Really, we fall in love without choice (whether the person is worth falling in love with or not)
Maybe if you are lucky you will fall in love with someone who is worth your love

I don't believe men realise that women are discriminated against on a regular basis and if, perhaps, they truly examined their thoughts about all aspects of women they would agree. We don't want to be EQUAL to men - I like the fact we are different, but I want to be treated with the same respect as a man. That is all.

I once worked in a sales office and (amazingly) was in a management role there. The Sales Director (a man) would always tell me how forward-thinking he was for employing me and that he was NOT a sexist. Then, one day, we had to replace one of the sales administration team. We were discussing this and he said to me:-
"I think we should try to employ a man in this role this time".
"Why" I asked
"Because the administration role is good training for sales managment, and if a man were in that role he could eventually be a sales manager"
SAY NO MORE..........!!
:-S

You are mistaken Chrissy. That 'look' Tom Cruise had was only for me.

Can you fall in love without seeing someone? Maybe, but I think there is a very strong possibility that you will quickly fall 'out' of love when you meet. I don't think this has anything to do with physical appearance, but everything to do with those 'non verbal' ways of communicating, which we all have and which give away lots about our true selves.

Ooooo you are a very wise lady Lyndie My view is that the danger with talking to someone you have not met i.e. on MSN or chat rooms, is that you probably talk MORE than you would normally do, and about more serious issues. You very quickly become very bonded and feel you are in love very quickly. Sometimes this may work and when you meet the person that bond is already so strong that nothing can break it. But there is also the danger that having become so close "online" you build up expectations about that person which turn out to be false. Whatever, it is fun finding out!
BTW - Tom is mine - hands off!

However you merit Orhan Pamuk's work (or his choice of subject matter), I would be interested to know the Turkish view on his current situation. Is he generally seen as:-

(a) A literary freedom fighter, so committed to freedom of speech that he will risk prison for his cause?
or
(b) A very clever business man who has taken a calculated risk that the controversy surrounding his current book will give him worldwide publicity and increase sales by many thousands, while safely avoiding prison because of the sensitive EU situation? After all, how many "pulp fiction" readers would have heard of Salmon Rushtie before the controversy over "Death of a Princess"?

I don't know? But I'm interested in your views!

There isn't really a phrase using "be it so". We do have "so be it" was that the phrase? "So be it" would be used in a similar way to the French "c'est la vie", and would normally be used as an acceptance of what can't be changed, so...."it is raining on my wedding day...so be it"!!!!!

Only a certain type of woman will like a man for money or because he is handsome. I think it is men who go for either looks or money. If women were so easily affected by good looks there would be more porn magazines for women! Women find attractiveness in men for many different subtle reasons and are not so 'obvious' as men. Intelligence? Yes of course. And why not?

I can tell you lots about Western men, well...English men! We have two extremes:

First the JEDI:
Most are very romantic, loving, and do not consider themselves above doing cooking, housework etc! My two great loves were both wonderful and did EVERYTHING round the house, cleaning, cooking, shopping for food..HONESTLY!
It is generally accepted that things are 50/50 and chores, bills etc. are split equally. I am not sure about going out and getting drunk etc. I think the girl who wrote that in another post must be very immature and/or young, but certainly they are not overly jealous and none of my boyfriends would DARE criticise my clothes for being too sexy or try to stop me having nights out with my girlfriends!
now....
THE DARK SIDE.... men who believe they are master of the house, master of you and master of money! Avoid them - you can usually spot them easily. They have shaved heads, wear English Flag shorts and get drunk all the time. Avoid these men at all costs...."beyond this point there be dragons.."

Well, I am still friends with him, but he knows I am watching his every step! You can't really be sure if they mean what they say, but as long as you make no commitments until you do, then there is no harm done! My friend has got a winter job now and has never actually asked me for anything, so I am, for the moment, giving him the benefit of the doubt!

I think all my first instincts are confirmed by you all. Instincts like those are easily hidden by romantic words, but my head must rule my heart. I think I will end this before it becomes a problem.

Every day on this site I read messages from girls (never boys you notice!) and all the messages are the same. They are all invited out to visit...there is a proposal..and so on. I want to scream at them "you fools"!! But I am so stupid I didn't notice that I am exactly the same!

It makes me so sad though. Not so sad for the loss of this man, or of love (love is everywhere!) as for my sadness of losing my faith in people's integrity. I loved Turkey so much I can shut my eyes and smell it's rich scent and hear it's melody but right now this man represents Turkey and it has deceived me. I am not a fool, and yet we English appear to be thought of as such because we believe people are being honest. It is very sad.

Thank you mltm (and for your past translations!). Believe me, I am NOT a fool. All through this relationship I have questioned everything to myself and been VERY cautious with him. I do not even know yet if I will go to see him in February. My concern is for the past week or so - this sudden wish to marry me does seem to coincide with his sudden lack of money! Also, I am not a very young girl (I am not OLD, but you know what I mean) and we stayed in a very good hotel, so he knows I have a good career and money. I think it is a shame, because despite all, I was very attracted to him and we had fun together.

I think our male friend knows what he's saying... And besides that - love is not supposed to hurt!

But of course you have to do it the way that feels right to you. It might take you some time to realize how things really are. Sometimes it's good to leave 'love' out of it and ask yourself: is he a good/caring person?, is he a reliable and mature person?, is he serious about his future/life?, is he making effort to understand and support you?, does he listen to you?, is he faithful to you?, is he open minded?... etc.

Not sure quite what you mean catwoman. Are you saying you think he is sincere or I should leave him?

I am not normally one for pooring out my problems, but I have read advice you have all given before and it is always GOOD ADVICE!

I met my boyfriend towards the end of my holiday in Turkey and he was not like the the other guys who had approached me. He was slightly older than them and was not so forward but always coming over to see me, complementing on my smile, etc. and winning me over very slowly and very romantically until I agreed to be his girlfriend.

When I returned from my holiday he rang every hour, sent sms messages all day and became angry if I did not answer the phone or return some of his messages. I feel, also, that he 'pushed' me into saying that I loved him - asking me again and again until I said it. For most of the time I do feel that I love him - we laugh together and we tell eachother all about our lives and I think he is wonderful. The trouble is that things are moving so fast and the more he pushes me the more I take a step back! I sent a message to him the other day (I had it translated on this website!) saying that I did not want him to plan any future for us yet and that when I go back to see him in Turkay in February it is to spend time together, enjoy eachother, have fun.

He seems to have completely ignored this message and, when I spoke to him just a while ago, he told me that he has told his mother about us and we have her blessing, that we will get married as soon as I say I am ready, that we can live in Istabul, Antalaya, Bodrum or UK - it is up to me, oh...and that we will have two children - a boy and a girl!!!!!!

This is TOO MUCH for me. I am not a hard person - in fact I am often accused of being over-romantic, but this is just too much! He has occasionally mentioned lately that he has no money at the moment and cannot find a winter job....am I right to be a bit suspicious about that?!!! By marrying me quick his problems would be solved, eh!

I am not sure if to carry on with this relationship. If he is sincere and being honest with me, then it is too much for me, but I will lose him and I DO feel so much for him!

Wise friends - what shall I do?????

"Come to think of it, is it so bad the way they do things in Turkey. Who knows how long love will last whether it is 'true' love in the European sense, or 'passing' love in the turkish boy sense. You can marry someone from your own culture, believe they love you and within a few years they treat you like dirt, run around with every other girl they see, drink too much and beat you!"

Lyndie this is SO true! I believe that these men can feel 'passing love' and really mean it. Is that not one of the best times in love? That excitement of being attracted to someone, getting to know them better, when everything is new. It is a joy and should be enjoyed. Young girls should also enjoy this too and not be so quick to whine and complain and suffocate their boyfriends - perhaps then they would find the boyfriends stay around longer anyway!

How can you really tell if a Turkish guy is serious about you? I am no fool, and I know they sometimes try to get girls from other countries to marry them, or to move to their country but are they ALL like that? They certainly seem to "fall in love" very quickly! One minute you are chatting to him, thinking you quite fancy them and the next, they are proposing! Please could you translate the following - I would love to continue a joke that I have with my boyfriend - he would love it if i sent the sms in turkish. Thank you so much!

"Askim, I will not frighten you with text messages tonight! Why do we always argue? I know it is mostly my fault, but if a woman has no anger, she has no passion, so really you are extremely lucky to have me!! Goodnight askim - I will dream of you even though you are a monster!"

Another one! I am so grateful to you all for helping me - could you help me with one from English to Turkish?

Askim talking to you today has made me so happy. To hear your voice again, to laugh with you, to hear you tell me you love me was so beautiful and means so much more than when we send sms. You have made my birthday so happy. Tonight I just want to be in your arms and kiss you and share my love with you.

Please could you translate this from English to Turkish? Many thanks in advance.

Askim - the reason I sometimes get angry with you is because when I go on the internet I find that there are thousands of girls who get the same sms messages from boys like you who work in resorts and return to Istanbul in winter and all their sms messages are the same too! I tell you at the start that I am no fool, but here I am - still loving you. How can I know that you are different from all these other turkish men?
